The Japanese Hayabusa-2 “rover” jogging onto asteroid

The Hayabusa-2 spacecraft successfully sent another rover to jump on the Rugu asteroid, announced the Japanese Space Agency (JAXA). The Mascot adds to the two Minerva “rover” that had descended on the asteroid on September 21st.

The German-made Mobile Asteroid Surface Scout (Mascot), which resembles a shoe box, has four scientific instruments: infrared microscope, camera, electromagnetic radiation meter and magnetometer. It will move to the surface of the asteroid and analyze its chemical composition, temperature and magnetic field.
